Spring Break 2012

We had an awesome spring break. I really wanted to get away again this year (last year we drove out to Kelle's house) but it just wasn't an option. Typically spring break consists of a lot of snow and I really didn't want to get stuck sitting around our house. We were really fortunate that we could spend a lot of our time outside. Unfortunately I forgot my camera for the vast majority of the activities. One of the things we wanted to do was drive up Mt. Herman and explore/make s'mores. The downside of all the nice weather is that everything is dry so there are a lot of fire restrictions. Rather than call the whole thing off we just did s'mores on the driveway. It wasn't quite the same but it probably was better in the end. Paul was exhausted and it was nice that we weren't trying to deal with him being cranky up there. On Tuesday we went to a fun arcade/play area called ITz. Samantha had been there for a birthday party at the beginning of the school year and had been asking to go back ever since. It is just ridiculously expensive and I haven't wanted to fork over the cash. This time the kids decided to help pay for it so I figured I could pay the rest. They had the BEST time. I am still getting asked on a daily basis when we can go back. Wednesday we hiked up to the reservoir in Palmer Lake. It is absolutely beautiful up there. It's amazing that we live 10 min away from someplace that beautiful. The kids did GREAT on the hike and didn't complain much at all, even though it was uphill the whole way. It was a lot of work for them and I was really proud of them for making it.  That was the one place we went that I really wished I had brought my camera. On Thursday we went out to breakfast. Big fail. All my kids want to eat in the morning is cereal. Even when the other option is GIANT donuts. It wasn't the best use of our time. We also decided to take the kids to the Olympic Training Center. They weren't all that thrilled but it was something that I wanted to do so they got dragged along. It wasn't their favorite but I don't think it was too terrible either. One of the coolest things we saw was that the record for the longest long jump was 29 feet 4 1/2 inches. They had that measured out on the floor and it was incredible. Hearing that number is one thing, seeing it laid out like that really makes it obvious just how long that is. To end our week we went up to a hotel in Denver that we got a fantastic deal on. It had a separate bedroom so everyone was able to sleep well plus free breakfast and a pool. We didn't do a whole lot up there other than swim (A LOT) and go to a really cool park. It was just fun to get away from the house for a couple days and be together as a family. That is another place the kids are asking to go back. As it turns out I am actually really glad that we decided to stay home, it was nice to have a break without the stress of traveling.

Hiking

The weather has been usually warm the past few weeks and so we wanted to get out and take advantage of all the sun. It was so nice to get outside after feeling cooped up all winter. We went hiking with Kevin and Allye on the Academy. It wasn't too steep, in fact it there were a lot of parts that were flat (maybe it was a walk not a hike). Samantha ran the WHOLE time. She would run ahead of the group then run back to us then run ahead again. I was watching her in pure amazement. Not only does it take a lot of energy to run that whole time (we were gone for at least an hour) but it was such a change from the last time we went. Every other time we've tried to hike, or even walk, she whines and wants to be carried after a few minutes. It drove me crazy because we couldn't go anywhere. It was nice to have her happy and energetic this time. Paul was a little sad because he couldn't keep up with her and kept getting left behind. Samantha would come back and try to help him but she would forget and would rush ahead again. I finally decided to tell Paul that he and I were on a treasure hunt and we would look for special rocks. It worked pretty well and we made it the rest of the way without too many tears from him.

The best action shot I could get

Paul with one of his special rocks. We ended up leaving all of them along the trail, glad they weren't so special we had to take them home.

By the end Paul had had it and I ended up a pack mule...where's Adam? Taking the picture. Thanks.
